Vapnik, together with Alexey Chervonenkis, can be considered the founding father of the field. He is also the author of two heavily-cited books on the subject, ''The Nature of Statistical Learning'' (Berlin, Springer, 1995) and ''Statistical Learning Theory'' (Wiley, New York, 1998).

Sara Solla's research interests lie in the application of statistical mechanics to the analysis of complex systems. For the last several years, her lecture on statistical learning at Methods in Computational Neuroscience (Marine Biological Lab, Woods Hole, MA) has been a highlight f the course.
